Vision Therapy for Strabismus & Amblyopia in Kids: How In-Office Retraining Works Without Surgery

When a child has strabismus or amblyopia, clear eyesight is only part of the picture. These conditions can affect how the eyes work together and how the brain processes visual information. At Brianna Herring, O.D., we provide pediatric vision care and vision therapy for families in Deerfield Beach and Plantation, FL, with treatment designed around each child's specific visual needs.

Understanding Strabismus and Amblyopia

Strabismus occurs when the eyes are not properly aligned, causing one eye to turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. Amblyopia, often called lazy eye, develops when the brain favors one eye and vision does not develop normally in the other.

The two conditions can occur together, but they are not the same. Both may interfere with depth perception, eye teaming, reading, sports, and other visually demanding activities.

Treatment depends on the child's diagnosis, age, eye health, and severity of the condition. Glasses, contact lenses, patching, vision therapy, and in some cases surgery may be considered.

How In-Office Vision Therapy Works

Vision therapy is a structured, individualized program designed to improve specific visual skills. Rather than simply strengthening the eye muscles, therapy helps retrain communication between the eyes and brain.

During in-office vision therapy, we may use specialized activities, lenses, prisms, or other tools to work on skills such as:

  • Eye alignment and coordination
  • Focusing accuracy and flexibility
  • Eye tracking and movement
  • Depth perception
  • Using both eyes together efficiently
  • Visual processing and spatial awareness

Exercises are adjusted as the child progresses so the visual system continues to be challenged in a controlled way.

Can Vision Therapy Help Without Surgery?

For some children with certain forms of strabismus or amblyopia, non-surgical treatment can play an important role in improving how the eyes function together. Vision therapy may also be used alongside glasses, patching, or other treatments.

However, vision therapy is not a replacement for surgery in every case of strabismus. Some types or degrees of eye misalignment may require surgical evaluation. A comprehensive pediatric eye and binocular vision evaluation helps us determine which treatment approach is appropriate.

Why Early Evaluation Matters

A child's visual system continues developing during childhood, making early identification of amblyopia, strabismus, and other binocular vision problems especially important. Parents in Deerfield Beach and Plantation may notice an eye turning, closing one eye when reading, tilting the head, poor depth perception, or difficulty with visually demanding schoolwork.

Even when symptoms seem minor, a comprehensive pediatric eye exam can identify problems that may not be detected during a basic vision screening.

At Brianna Herring, O.D., we evaluate how your child's eyes see, focus, move, and work together before recommending a personalized treatment plan.
